In just one semester, a certificate can be obtained from the School of Arts and Communication at Salt Lake Community College.

SLCC students who complete a Skill Set Pathways certificate can sharpen their skills in a variety of disciplines, including fashion and interior design, visual art and design, film and media, and theatre.

Students do not have to be enrolled in a specific degree-seeking program in order to earn a Skill Set Pathways certificate.

After completing a specific set of three or four classes, students can strengthen their skills in a variety of different areas while also progressing through their general education courses. Many of the classes required for Skill Set Pathways can fulfill elective requirements while also teaching students the tools needed to achieve personal goals within an educational experience.

“If you were in a variety of fields, having experience and training in professional commercial photography would really come in handy,” says Josh Elstein, manager of the Center for Arts and Media.

Students that have experience and skills within a multitude of fields will be more employable than those who only have a basic comprehension of the tasks that are required of them.

“You could end up in a medical field and still have to post a video showing how to do a medical procedure,” says Alison Arndt-Wild, assistant professor of media studies and journalism.

Although these certificates do not show up in official SLCC transcripts, the skills that are earned through attending the classes can be used as proof of proficiency in a specific skill on a resume.

Once a student passes the required classes, they need to fill out the certificate of achievement application form available through the School of Arts and Communication. SLCC will then verify the grades of the completed classes and mail the certificate.

Students are encouraged not to procrastinate, because there is most likely a Skill Set Pathway that fits into their future career. In just a short time, additional opportunities and financial security can become available through the development of these new skills.
