Most Salt Lake Community College students have heard of Student Life and Leadership, but may not know exactly what role they play on campus.

With locations at Taylorsville Redwood, South City and Jordan campuses, the Student Life and Leadership office finds ways to help SLCC students across the valley. The office holds events year-round and acts as a resource for student involvement and leadership opportunities.

“I’ve seen Student Life provide many students with opportunities for personal and professional progress and growth,” says Nelly Quintanilla, one of the coordinators for Student Life and Leadership. “We are always expanding, so we’d love to have you involved with us!”

Last semester, Student Life and Leadership hosted a screening of “Avengers: Endgame” on its opening weekend, which gave students a chance to see the blockbuster film at a substantially discounted price. The event proved to be a success, with tickets selling out quickly.

Student Life also hosts special guest speakers and offers scholarships or chances to win free textbooks. In addition, the office is responsible for the Bruin Bash, a big kick-off celebration at the beginning of every school year.

Student Life and Leadership is over the Salt Lake Community College Student Association, or SLCCSA. This part of the organization includes an executive council, student senators, and their board members, all completely made up of students.

“We are an office where students can get involved with our Student Association,” Quintantilla says. Students can have a say in what goes on at SLCC, and SLCCSA becomes the connection they need to do something about it.

With senators and board members listening to the students’ needs, they make sure student voices are heard.

“It’s good that we have the student councils because they know what students need. They are students themselves and are experiencing school currently, versus someone who isn’t a student just guessing what we need without having that direct experience,” says Natalie Bailey, a nursing student at SLCC.

Student Life and Leadership also keeps track of SLCC clubs. Whether it’s the Automotive and Racing Crew or the Global Connection Leadership club, the office has information about each club and how students can start their own club.

For more information about Student Life and Leadership, visit any of their offices at the Taylorsville Redwood, South City, or Jordan campuses. They are open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
