SLCC volleyball adds Brazilian sisters to roster

Among the new additions to the Salt Lake Community College volleyball team are two promising international players.

Born and raised in Brazil, Thayna “Tye” Fuchs and her twin sister, Thamyres “Tem” Fuchs, started playing volleyball at a very young age. But adjusting to life in America has had its challenges.

Tye and Tem are studying English four days a week from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in their first semester at SLCC.

Overcoming the language barrier has been hard, especially when trying to communicate with other people. According to the sisters, “it is difficult to live in a place where no one understands, and you can’t explain anything.”

After English, Tye and Tem hit the volleyball court at 5:30 p.m. for practice. The sisters say that certain exercises are strenuous and very different from when they played in Brazil.

Despite the long hours of study and the difficult workout regimen, the twins are very excited for the opportunity to learn and play at SLCC and look forward to a great year with the Bruins.

Salt Lake will add additional recruits to the roster before the 2016 season starts in the fall. But the new additions to the team show promise, and may help take the Bruins all the way to Nationals.

“The team is looking great,” says team trainer Indigo Allen. “I think [we] will go far this year.”
