Monty Python’s ‘Not the Messiah’ comes to The Grand Theatre for the second time. Based on Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’ and written by Eric Idle and scored by John Du Prez, this production provides audience members with classic Monty Python humor and a full symphony to back it up.
“You don’t need to have seen ‘Life of Brian’ though, to appreciate the humor,” says Kate Rufener, Community Outreach Coordinator for The Grand Theatre. “It is still funny, and the jokes are applicable today. The real beauty of comedic troops is they are as applicable today as they always have been, and you see that here with ‘Not the Messiah.’”
Idle is no stranger to humor. He has written and acted in the legendary ‘Monty Python’ TV series and movies for many years. Playing the “Bring out your dead” Dead Collector, among other characters, in ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ his tongue in cheek humor is his signature, and will be well evident in ‘Not the Messiah.’
Du Prez started his film career in 1978 by composing some additional music for ‘Life of Brian.’
Du Prez has scored over 20 films in his career including Once Bitten, UHF, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series from the ‘90s. DuPrez and Idle have collaborated on many things over the years and ‘Not the Messiah’ is a product of their partnership.
‘Not the Messiah’ runs Apr. 3-5 and the shows start at 7:30pm.
“Last year the shows were pretty popular,” says Rufener. “So make sure you show up with plenty of time.”
Tickets can be purchased at The Grand Theatre box office for $15. SLCC students can get one free ticket with their OneCard, and can get 4 additional tickets for a discounted price.
