Mary Flanagan has recently been appointed as Salt Lake Community College’s student body president. Although, coming to this position hasn’t been the easiest process.

Before coming to SLCC, Flanagan had multiple setbacks.

“I had lost all scholarships to my name due to health problems. And for a while, I struggled to find the will to live,” she says. “I then found my way to SLCC, and to say it saved my life would be a serious understatement. Being SLCCSA president means I can hope and work to provide a similar atmosphere to the one that saved my life — if I can make a difference in even one student’s life.”

Flanagan served as a student senator for four semesters, overseeing three SLCC campuses, and was elected president in March.

“I saw how far we, as a Student Association, had come in that time, and desired to be here to see our goals come to life,” she says.

With serving as a student senator and now student body president, her daily work revolves around students and their livelihoods at SLCC.  Flanagan expresses the exciting opportunities she is given while in this position.

“I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people in my day-to-day life as a student body president. I also have the unique opportunity to meet with all other Utah student body presidents on a monthly basis, forming what is known as the Utah Student Association,” she says.

Not only does Flanagan meet with student leaders from other colleges, but she also oversees the board of vice presidents that oversee the logistics of the student senate at SLCC.

“(They) are in charge of everything from publicity and advertising, clubs and organizations, regional events, to the student senate. This allows me the chance to be heavily involved with the student body, all thanks to the incredible student leaders I serve alongside,” Flanagan says.

Flanagan also helps the student body with any questions regarding their higher education at SLCC.

“Most recently, following the release of a statement regarding student tuition and fees, I have received several questions regarding the statement. It has been my responsibility to seek the answers to these questions and relay them onto the student,” she says.

The Student Association, along with Flanagan, work hard to provide a safe and efficient environment for all who attend SLCC.

“Students can expect fun and inclusive events, unique modern advertising, representation, and more from the Student Association,” she says.

The SLCCSA wants all students to feel welcome and see the importance of taking part in their activities they have to offer at SLCC.

“I love serving next to so many incredible student leaders. I learn something new from them every single day. I am grateful to have the privilege to advocate for the student’s voice as a member of the Board of Trustees,” Flanagan says.

Being involved is the first step in making an unforgettable college experience. The Student Life and Leadership office is always accepting applications for the Student Senate, Event Planning, Publicity and Advertising, and Clubs and Organization Boards.

Students who are interested in joining the student senate can stop by the Student Life and Leadership office or apply on Orgsync under SLCCSA Involvement Application.
