Work-study jobs help cover tuition costs

Former U.S. Representative Solomon Ortiz once said, “Education is the key to success in life.” A college education, however, is not the easiest to pay for.

Tuition is continuously rising every year, and traditional financial aid is also lacking for some students. The more student loans a student takes out, the more money they will owe in the end.

To help working students, companies may offer the much-needed assistance of tuition reimbursement. If a student doesn’t have access to this type of program, Salt Lake Community College can help.

Other than scholarships received through the school, SLCC also offers an array of jobs that will help pay for tuition. One type of job offered is a work-study job.

The federal work-study program provides part-time and full-time positions for students that are in financial need. These jobs allow the student to work and have their paycheck go towards their tuition.

The jobs provided emphasize on the area of study the student is interested in. Like many jobs out there, there are a few qualifications that need to be met:

  1. A student must be a full-time or part-time student.
  2. The student must demonstrate financial need.
  3. The student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

Once all the requirements are met, a student may apply to the work-study jobs.

The pay amount for a work-study job is currently based at the federal minimum wage. At SLCC, this ranges from $10.11 to $12.23. This can also depend on the time of application and the level of financial need.

The school will pay the student directly. Students can choose to have the money sent straight to a bank account or use it towards educational expenses.

If a work-study position is not a fit or a student doesn’t qualify, SLCC also has a list of companies that offer tuition reimbursement such as Amazon, Boeing and Goldman Sachs. The list also includes local companies like ARUP Laboratories, Harmons and St. Mark’s Hospital.

A resume is required for students interested in a work-study position. Cover letters and resume help is available through SLCC Career Services.
