The Salt Lake Community College chapter of Collegiate DECA hosted their first-ever fundraising tournament, the Bruin Basketball Brawl, last weekend in the Lifetime Activities Center.

Nine teams participated in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which raised funds for DECA students to travel to the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California.

“The tournament was a success and [the club] hopes to make it a regular tournament,” says SLCC DECA communication officer Kaitlin Hofer.

Half-court games were played with a referee on both ends of the gym. The bracket matchups were rotated around in order to allow the tourney to play out. The first team to score 21 points won their game and moved on to the next round.

After the tournament was over, the winning team gathered their prizes, took pictures and returned to the court to play pickup games like the ones held every Friday in the LAC.

Tournament entry fees contributed a majority of the fundraising. The money raised will help SLCC DECA students as they prepare for the ICDC in April.

SLCC DECA members have already won a state competition at Weber State University, and attending the ICDC will provide additional opportunities to compete and network with other students.

“Beyond competitions, there will be conferences, workshops, speakers, and much more that will give students a unique experience,” Hofer says.

DECA students participate in a variety of activites designed to build communication, business, marketing and management skills. Any student interested in joining DECA can log on to OrgSync or contact the DECA advisor for more information.
