Salt Lake Community College is building a new campus on Salt Lake City’s west side.
After breaking ground on June 1, 2016, the $43 million Westpointe Career and Technical Education Center will be the new home for many of the CTE programs that SLCC offers. The 121,000 square-foot campus is expected to open in 2018.
The new center will be located at 2150 W. Dauntless Ave, which is just east of Salt Lake City International Airport. Several SLCC industry partners are located in the surrounding area, which contributed to the decision to build at that location.
Plans for the new facility include eight classrooms and 34 lab spaces for the different trades offered at Westpointe, and a new three-acre lot for the commercial truck driving program. While the new campus will house many existing CTE programs, the expansion will also allow for new fields of study, including industrial robotics and metrology.
More than 28,000 students are currently enrolled in CTE courses through SLCC. This population includes traditional students, job seekers and employees who want to learn new skills and techniques to improve their chances of being hired in high-growth areas.
Once completed, SLCC expects the new Westpointe Center will provide high-tech training to prepare students for future employment in rapidly evolving industries, all in an effort to change lives and create a positive impact on the Utah economy.
