Welcome students of Salt Lake Community College!
Who is excited for the school year of 2014-2015? I truly hope each one of you had an exciting and fantastic summer and are now prepared for a year of wonderful opportunities. New friends will be made and life-changing experiences will happen here at SLCC. I hope each of you will have the best experience possible.
To our new students, welcome to SLCC and I hope that the next two years here will be the best two years of your life. College can be an intimidating new environment to be in. The first two weeks of school is critical as far as making friends and getting in the hang of college. I encourage everyone, not just the freshman, to go out and participate in as many events as possible. Make new friends; don’t be shy. Meet someone of a different ethnicity because diversity will help everyone broaden his or her horizons.
When life gets stressful, I encourage everyone to go get your FREE one-hour massage from the Health & Wellness Center. We also have an amazing team from First Year Experience to help and guide you through your first footsteps of college.
To our returning students, welcome back and I hope that everyone is ready to start off strong for another year, as you get closer to graduation. I would like to encourage everyone to make new students feel welcome and at home here at SLCC. Returning students know the way to go around the campus, how to use the campus computers, and find the resources. Remember what it first felt like when you got lost looking for your class, asking for advice on how to survive the class, or when you needed a new place for lunch. Set an example to our new students and welcome them with a warm smile.
Did you know that SLCC has a Student Association? The answer to that question is: yes. The SLCC Student Association is here to serve and represent the student body, and we also bring a little fun and new experiences to college. We have exciting lectures, as well as events for day and night planned for you to enjoy. We want to serve the student body to the best of our ability.
You can also join a club here at SLCC. We have about 60 clubs for you to explore. We have clubs such as Asian Student Association, Polynesian United Association, Hispanic Latino Club, Latinos in Action, MESA, Pre-Med Club, Coloring Outside the Lines, Sports Rally, Fashion Club and many more. Our clubs reflect the diversity of our student body, but if you do not find a club you are interested in, we will help you start your own.
Besides clubs, we have a Student Senate. They are the problem solvers for the student body. We have senators that represent students of each academic school at the college. These senators meet regularly with administration and faculty members to bring up and discuss student concerns. If you have any concerns about the professor, classes, food on campus, accessibility or college resources, please don’t hesitate to mention these to the senators. Use the twitter hashtag #SLCCStudentIssues so we can see them on social media.
The Student Senate can be found at https://orgsync.com/35774/chapter and http://www.slcc.edu/sll/student-senate.aspx so please check this out.
This is the year for change and it all starts with you. Be more proactive about what is going on around campus.
I look forward to a wonderful year filled with new friends, new experiences and a whole lot of Bruin Pride. If you see me on campus, feel free to stop me and say, “Hi.” I may not know who you are yet but I look forward to creating a friendship with you. One last thing, I encourage all of you to use the hashtag #BruinAndProud for anything and everything that you post about SLCC.
Please feel free to contact me via email at justine.tabligan@slcc.edu or come visit me in my office STC 232 at Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Every student is welcome.
I am here to serve you and make your experience at SLCC be the best it can be.
Your Executive Vice President,
Justine Faith Tabligan
