Helping with a smile

I have been attending Salt Lake Community College for a couple of years now. The one thing that has always impressed me about the school is how nice everybody is.

As a reporter for the school’s newspaper I have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of faculty members. They have always been willing to take the time to talk with me and are always willing to help in any way that they can. Some have even gone out of their way to be helpful and most are appreciative of having the story they were interviewed for printed in the school’s newspaper.

This might sound like kind of a sad commentary on the world, but I find it very interesting that all these school employees are so nice. Is it a requirement to get hired to work at the college? It almost seems like it is. Even when school employees such as the ones that work in the cafeteria, the information booth or the bookstore are really busy they still manage a smile and are very polite and helpful.

The instructors at SLCC are the same way. They are very helpful and are always willing to give you little bit of time if you need it. I have never met a single instructor that I didn’t like. They are all so likeable.

The other thing about the instructors at SLCC that I’ve noticed is that they seem to give off a positive attitude and message. They are all very aware that what they teach will be used when we leave SLCC. It seems that most students notice how their instructors make the class they are attending so interesting, fun or both. The instructors at SLCC have such a great reputation that some are even known to be better than some of the instructors and professors at the University of Utah. It seems that as students, we should feel lucky about having such great people instructing us.

As far as that goes, as students we should feel happy about going to such a great school like SLCC. Some of the school’s programs are well known for how they are run. The Veterans Center, for example, is known by colleges around the country for how well it treats veterans.

Maybe it has something to do with the school’s mission. Maybe it has something to do with the criteria for hiring people at the school, or maybe its because the people who work at the school know how important their job is to the students. Most likely it is all of the above.

Whatever the reasons, because of the people that work here, Salt Lake Community College is definitely a benefit to students seeking an education and to the community at large.
