On Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13, Salt Lake Community College Dance Company will perform Earth Dance, a dance concert with a combination of both student and staff choreography, about the forces of nature.
Tess Boone, Associate Professor of Dance, says that the choreography the audience will see is mostly student choreography.
“This concert is about the dynamics of nature,” says Boone in a press release. “The universe is expanding, thunder and lightning are not static, the ocean is always in motion.”
The inspiration for the choreography comes from the forces of nature, such as water, earthquakes, wind, thunder storms and the Big Bang theory.
There is a variety of dance styles, from contemporary to jazz, and ballet to hip hop. There will also be a piece based on West African dance and predator behavior.
The concert will have a back drop of multimedia, with video and animation to add more interest for the audience
Theater technology and the visual art and design students, along with theater students, collaborated to create the multimedia back drop that is used in the show.
Boone says this show will have the same feeling as Earth Works, the fall 2012 Dance Company show. But Earth Dance will be more about the student choreography.
Tickets are $8 or have price with two non-perishable food items to donate to the Utah Food Bank. Admission is free for SLCC students and faculty with a current SLCC I.D. plus two food items.
The show is this weekend on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm at The Grand Theatre.
