Year in and year out, Salt Lake Community College produces an outstanding Women’s Volleyball team.

This year, head Women’s Volleyball coach Sue Dulaney enters her fifth season, and brings with her four returning sophomores. Seniority, leadership and talent have shaped success thus far for the Bruins.
Bruins Volleyball competes as a member of the Scenic Western Athletic Conference (SWAC), and each year bids for the Region 18 championship.
Over the last eight seasons, the Bruins have dominated Region 18 opponents, such as College of Southern Idaho, Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) and Snow College.
SLCC earned the top spot in Region 18 in six of the last eight seasons, and a second and third place respectively the last two seasons.
SLCC has also earned five consecutive top ten finishes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament that concludes each season.
The Lady Bruins having another successful year
The Bruins first test this season was at the Buffalo Wild Wings-Hilex Poly Invitational hosted by the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, Idaho on Aug. 24.
SLCC fared well in their first week of action. They beat three Community Colleges out of Wyoming, as well as Phoenix Community College. All four teams lasted only the minimum of three sets.
The Bruins got off to a red hot start this season going 6-0 after beating Western Wyoming Community College on the road on Aug. 28 and defeating Central Wyoming here in the SLCC Tournament opener.
The Bruins took three out of four games here at the SLCC Tournament before heading to Houston, Texas for the Woodland Wave Tournament.
The Bruins looked sharp in Houston. They went 4-0 in the tournament including a victory over No. 1 ranked Tyler Junior College.
This years non-conference home opener kicked off on September 11 Honor Night with an emotional National Anthem sung by a young girl in front of a scarce student section. SLCC defeated Western Wyoming Community College in four sets.
SLCC hit the road again for the Pizza Hut Tournament in Sterling, Colorado. The Bruins dropped two out of four games, losing to currently NJCAA ranked No. 3 Western Nebraska Community College and No. 5 Iowa Western Community College.
Returning sophomores form the core of the 2012 lineup
SLCC is led by their talented core of four sophomores that all returned from last year’s team. They lead the team in nearly every major category including kills, blocks, assists and aces.
Sophomore outside hitter Maddie Bushman came from Tucson, Arizona to join the Bruins. She is the backbone of the team, and leads the Bruins with 201 of the team’s 612 kills this season. Bushman also has a team high 26 aces.
Alongside Bushman is the local talent of Sophomore Cortney Godfrey from Bingham High School. Godfrey is the “point guard” of the offense. She has distributed the ball all year, tallying 449 assists so far.
Sophomore middle hitter’s Mayra Ramirez and Brittani Cole have used their height advantage to tally 95 of the team’s 140 total blocks this season. Ramirez has also thrown down 95 kills, good for third on the team.
The Lady Bruin’s are also talented off the court. Bushman is on the SLCC Presidents List with at least a 3.8 GPA. Not only has she been recognized here at SLCC, but Bushman is also on the NJCAA Superior Academic Achievement List. She has recorded at least a 3.8 GPA for at least 45 credit hours.
Fellow Sophomore Cortney Godfrey earned herself a spot on SLCC’s Deans List with at least a 3.5 GPA.
