Multicultural students in a language class
Multicultural students in a language class. Non-white students made up 26.3 percent of Salt Lake Community College’s student population in 2017-18.

Salt Lake Community College is Utah’s largest college, with a diverse population that includes students from around the world.

SLCC provides international students with high-quality instruction, small class sizes, affordable tuition and services to support their studies and enjoy American culture.

“The International Student Orientation program helps me a lot to make new friends and make me feel welcome in the campus,” says Tomas Gana, a second-semester student from Chile.

The International Student Services office at Taylorsville Redwood Campus supports international students in their employment on-campus or off-campus by a letter of permission to Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) to accept their work legally.

“I want to know about CPT or OPT although I haven’t had any help from SLCC yet,” says Chel Jin, a third-semester student from South Korea.

In a blog post for the European Association for International Education, psychological counselor and intercultural education officer Frank Haber co-wrote that a school should have emotional support techniques when talking to highly distressed international students since there are some unique mental health issues faced by international students.

According to the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, the Supporting Multicultural Student Success initiative helps students adapt to the new surroundings. Its programs include student access and success coaching, mentoring, workshops, cultural programming, the Multicultural Student Council and the Partnership for Accessing College Education scholarships, or PACE.

“A possible improvement to the service for international students is by making it known to more student and making it more accessible,” says Richie Nguyen, a second-semester student from Vietnam.

SLCC also offers programs such as Essential College Study, Elements of Effective Communication, and Intercultural Communication to assist international students in adjusting to academic life in the United States.

Visit the SLCC website for more information about International Student Services on campus.
