How to stay trendy and follow runway fashion

Fashion trends are like ocean waves: they come and go.

At Salt Lake Community College, you see different fashion trends everywhere you look. Students display many different styles of fashion: the jock, the preppy student, the chic, tomboy, punk, you name it. No matter what style you fall under, the key is knowing how to keep up with the latest fashion trends.

SLCC fashion design student Fransisco Ortega defines a fashion trend as “something that goes out of style fairly quickly, [yet] makes a statement, like fanny packs, floral, or Hawaiian patterns.”

While fashion trends can change quickly, it’s always interesting and fun to see what designs are trending today.

How to keep up on trends

Trendimi, a fashion website, lists a few ways to stay on top of fashion trends.

  1. Follow celebrities, artists or fashion shows on social media that way you get all the latest content.
  2. Go window shopping so that you can see what is new on the streets in your hometown.
  3. Word of mouth, talk to your friends about what they are doing, and ask them where they go shopping.

“I pick up fashion trends from the runway shows [at the different] Fashion Week [events],” Ortega says. I [also] follow a lot of the designers on Instagram.”

Society bases fashion on trends or movements that a large number of people follow.

“Fashion is a style or flavor that starts to become a thing through majority,” says SLCC student Precious Stowall.

Styles are based off of hobbies, passions and what individuals feel most comfortable in.

“If I had to declare a style I follow, I’d say I’m really old school, but I’m also a dancer. I like the baggy look,” Stowall says. “I like what I like; it’s hard to find something bad on someone else, but if I’m not drawn to it, I won’t wear it.”
