It’s time to take advantage of free scholarship money for the upcoming school year.
Salt Lake Community College offers numerous scholarships specifically for its students. Scholarships are considered gifts, meaning the money does not need to be repaid. But many students who could claim one of these awards make the mistake of thinking they are not eligible.
Students may not be aware of all the reasons they may qualify for scholarships. SLCC has issued scholarships targeted towards women, first-generation college students and non-U.S. citizens, among other groups.
Most scholarship applications have some basic requirements, such as an essay or a minimum grade point average. But these conditions should not discourage a student from applying, since a substantial number of scholarships go unclaimed every year.
Continuing SLCC students have until March 1 to submit their scholarship application.
In addition to SLCC scholarships, local businesses and organizations also provide scholarships for qualifying students. Students should review the criteria for each scholarship to see if they are eligible to apply.
Students who want a second opinion about their essay can meet with a tutor in the Student Writing Center. These peer editors can proofread the essay and offer feedback and suggestions before the student submits it.
Anyone who has questions about SLCC scholarships or the application process can email scholarships@slcc.edu for more information.
