Welcome to SLCC or Welcome Back if you’re a continuing student. I hope your summer was wonderful and that you’re ready for a great semester.

I want to commend and thank you for choosing Salt Lake Community College as the next step on your academic and career journey. You are one of 61,000 other students who made the decision to study here given our stellar faculty, small class sizes, convenience, affordability and variety of course offerings.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to spread the word—and I hope you will too—about a new college-wide initiative designed to make SLCC affordable for everyone. It’s called the SLCC Promise.
The SLCC Promise is designed to help make your college education affordable. If you qualify for and receive a Pell grant, the SLCC Promise will make up the difference between what you are awarded and the total cost of tuition and fees. It’s that simple. To qualify for the SLCC Promise, students must:
- Be a Utah resident.
- Complete the FAFSA and be eligible to receive a Pell Grant.
- Enroll in 12 credit hours or more at SLCC.
- Develop an academic plan with an advisor.
- Maintain a 2.0 GPA.
You can still apply if you haven’t, but hurry! All you need to do is complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.fafsa.ed.gov, commit to attending full-time and make an academic plan. We’ll take it from there. If you have any questions, please reach out to the SLCC Contact Center at 801-957-4073.
Finally, I know college can seem like a maze and sometimes it’s difficult to know what options are available or if you’re on the right path. Please take time to meet with an advisor or faculty member to ask questions and to make sure you’re aware of the resources and pathways that are available to you. Having someone help you choose the right classes might save you time and money and lead to a more successful college experience.
Welcome, SLCC students! Get involved. Read your syllabi. Meet new people. Expand your thinking. And have a great year.
Sincerely,
Deneece G. Huftalin, PhD
