Many college students never get to play sports while in school, but Salt Lake Community College students now have that opportunity through a club called Sports Rally.

Founded by SLCC student Jesse Valdez, Sports Rally is a way for community college students to gain new experiences or relive their glory days as a participant in team sports.

“Sports Rally is a place that brings intramurals to SLCC,” said Valdez. “We wanted to get people involved that weren’t on the athletics teams at SLCC. We wanted them to feel like they were still important.”

Sports Rally currently participates in basketball, softball and tackle football.  While fees vary for each sport, the high level of fun and the opportunity to socialize remains the same. Except for basketball, which is for men only, other sports are open to everyone regardless of age or gender.

Sports Rally is always looking to expand and add new games.

“We play whatever the demand is,” said Valdez. “So if people want to play soccer, we’ll play soccer. Or even ultimate Frisbee. It’s really whatever the majority wants to play.”

The club organizes all types of events, from pick-up games to league play.

To give their sports teams a goal, football and basketball play in leagues. Football is played in the spring and fall, and depending on time of year eight to 12 teams play in the league.

The basketball team participates in community basketball leagues. What league they join depends on the amount of students that want to play.

If Sports Rally isn’t playing in their league games, members are always willing to get together for a pick-up game, in any sport. They want SLCC students to come out and have fun, regardless of the level of competition.

To participate in Sports Rally, members need to have a passion for sport and, except for softball bats, their own equipment to play with.

Anyone interested in joining the club can check out the football team Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. at Taylorsville Park on 4700 South and Redwood Road. While the roster is set for the spring season, the games give fans an idea of how Sports Rally activities give members the chance to work together as a team in a quest for glory.

Their motto is simple: “It’s never too late.”
