The holiday season has begun, which many associate with gift giving.
While receiving gifts may bring holiday cheer, donating money, time and energy to those less fortunate can leave donors and recipients with a greater appreciation for charity.
If you are looking to make a difference in your community, here are six volunteer opportunities in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area.
Catholic Community Services: Gift of the Drummer

What you can do: Donate diapers, toiletries, gift certificates, clothing, educational toys without batteries and other much-needed items for refugee and low-income children.
National Ability Center
Where: Park City Mountain Resort, Brighton and Deer Valley

What you can do: Volunteer with the Ski and Snowboard Program to help individuals with disabilities enjoy wintertime sports. Call for more information or to sign up for training today.
UAID Holiday Cheer
Where: UAID Office on 1453 S. Major Street (between State and Main) in Salt Lake City

What you can do: Volunteer with the Holiday Gift Box program, or adopt an ornament and donate needed items for a client. Anyone can also volunteer their time to teach arts and crafts, play games or watch movies with clients.
Veterans Holiday Celebration
Where: 700 S. Foothill Drive in Salt Lake City
When: Now until Dec. 24, 2015

What you can do: Volunteers can organize a gift drive with your family or community for the residents to receive on Christmas Day. Presents and donations can be dropped off at the nursing home before Dec. 24.
Neighborhood House

What you can do: Spend time volunteering with adults with disabilities. People who can sing, dance, or play music are much needed to make the holiday bright for the adult day program.
Homeless Youth Resource Center

What you can do: Volunteers and donations are still needed for after the holidays. HYRC is run by the Volunteers of America. Donations of men’s and women’s socks, winter wear, hand warmers, flashlights and calling cards are welcome.
