Opening April 3 at The Black Box Theatre is “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
Based on the Charles Schulz comic strip “Peanuts.”
The Black Box is a unique theater at SLCC. The students participating in the productions have their hands in just about every part.
“We do about three or four productions a year,” says Julie Heaton, SLCC Performing Arts Program Director. “These productions involve students in all aspects. From acting in the various productions to stage management and even set construction”
Another unique thing The Black Box has to offer is its ability to configure the stage in any way imaginable.
“Black box theaters are unique because you can re-orient the stage and audience in any way you want,” says Heaton. “For our upcoming production of ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,’ the theater is set up in the round. That means the audience is on all four sides of the cast who performs in the middle of the room.”
This kind of a set up offers a good view for the whole audience, no matter where you sit.
The Black Box isn’t just for the budding thespian. There are many other aspects that go into a production that require talents of all kinds.
“We offer a class called Stage Craft that teaches students about set construction, and students enrolled in that class build and paint the sets,” says Heaton. “We also require all other theater students to work in the scene shop for a few hours each semester if they are enrolled in a theater class. This just gives a well-rounded perspective on all the various elements that go into a production.”
Any students interested in participating in a Black Box production can get more information from the Black Box page on the Salt Lake Community College website, or check out the SLCC Film and Theater Facebook page.
“The show is based on the Peanuts comic strip and is also a musical,” says Heaton. “We have 17 actors in the show, all based on the comic strip. It’s a comedy, so come prepared for a good time!”
Tickets can be purchased at the Grand Theatre Box Office for $10, or half off with a valid OneCard. Please see the Black Box page on the SLCC website for dates and show times.
