Women’s basketball: SLCC advances to the Sweet 16

Salt Lake Community College women’s basketball won their first round match up against Lake Region State College (LRSC) 73-63 on March 17, 2014, which advances them into the sweet 16 in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

Natalie Parsons led the way for the Bruins with 12 points as they took 38-25 lead into the half. Mercedes Riggs, Britney Johnson and Summer Yack each had four points in the first half.

Yack continued her strong play knocking down the first bucket for the Bruins after LRSC scored the first four points of the half. The Lady Royals fought back outscoring the Bruins 38-35 in the second half and were down by three points with 2:07 left in the game.

Parsons finished the game with 15 points; Yack had 15 points and four rebounds and four assists.

Bella Swan came off the bench to score 12 points, gather six boards and record a block; Tanesha Daniels had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cassidy Fraughton added six points and five rebounds, and Riggs scored four points, dished five assists and had one steal in the winning effort.

Head Coach Betsy Specketer and the Bruins advance to the ‘Sweet 16’ to face No. 5-seed Central Arizona College (29-2) on Tuesday, March 18 with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m. MDT.
