The Salt Lake Community College women’s basketball team has played a spectacular basketball season, but in the Region 18 Championship they came up just short of bringing home the trophy to SLCC.
The Lady Bruins trailed by as many as 12 points, but like they have done all season they never gave up and didn’t back down from the challenge. The Bruins outscored College of Southern Idaho (CSI) 43-35 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as SLCC fell 67-65.
Bella Swan was the leading scorer on the court for SLCC as she scored 16 points and added eight rebounds. Fellow teammate Mercedes Riggs dropped 14 points and pulled down three rebounds with four assists. Natalie Parson also added a double digit scoring effort on the night with 10 points and three boards off the glass.
Even in the losing effort, Bella Swan and Cassidy Fraughton were both awarded for their outstanding play throughout the tournament as they were named to the 2014 Region 18 All-Tournament team and were both among five players selected to the team.
Head Coach Betsy Specketer and the Bruins will await news of an at-large berth in the NJCAA National Tournament to be held in Salina, Kan. With today’s victory, CSI has earned an automatic berth in the National Tournament as Region 18 Champions.
