The Salt Lake Community College Student Association organized a meet-and-greet with candidates for student government last Thursday in the multipurpose room at South City Campus.
Running unopposed are candidates Mary Flanagan, for SLCCSA president, and Mason Bancroft, for SLCCSA executive vice president.
Flanagan is a current member of the SLCCSA. As far as she’s concerned, the things impacting students the most are the “little things,” or the areas you’d least expect.
Some of the areas that Flanagan plans to address include students’ rights and responsibilities, and of course, clubs.
“As your president,” Flanagan states, “I’ll focus on the little things to make sure your experience at SLCC [is] even better.”
First and foremost, Bancroft aims to shine a light on lesser-known resources and highlight ways to reduce student living-costs. His experience in the Executive Council allows him to get to work sooner, and he’s working faster on these aforementioned goals.
“For me personally, I don’t like to assume what student problems are. I would like to hear them. So as I’m talking to students, it develops,” Bancroft says. “I’m trying to really push for OER [open educational resources] — those seem to be very helpful for students.”
Currently serving as the SLCCSA’s South Region vice president, Bancroft speaks about better utilizing career services down in the basement of the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
“I feel because people are coming in droves to get their degrees finished, using career services can be very beneficial if people are looking to get a head start, whether it’s through internships or simply building a resume. I feel like that’s a pretty important thing,” Bancroft says.
Elections for SLCCSA president and executive vice president started at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Students can cast their vote online until the polls close at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Election announcements will be held at noon Friday in the Copper Room in the Student Event Center at Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
