Welcome Days: Starting the semester off right

September is going to be a very busy month for incoming students at Salt Lake Community College.

The college has prepared many different activities to get people involved and to aid students in finding out about all the perks SLCC provides. All of these events are part of the SLCC Welcome Days.

“Welcome Days at SLCC are good, well-organized and prepared. You can see the effort from the Student Association,” says SLCC student Juan Ordonez.

The events help ease the confusion for students transitioning from high school to college.

“I think Welcome Days are important because college can be a very confusing time for people, especially those of us who are just coming out of high school,” says SLCC student Konner Beck. “I think it’s a very big change between [high school and college] and it’s nice to have people help us through that and figure things out. Personally, I’m most looking forward to learning about new topics that interest me while paying the least amount of tuition that I can.”

Fairs

In August, there were multiple community engagement fairs where students could find ways to be engaged in their communities as well as internships, volunteer opportunities, service-learning placements, work-study, AmeriCorps, employment and more. Those interested in these events are encouraged to contact the Thayne Center for Service & Learning for information on how to join.

There will be many resource fairs at various SLCC campuses this month. During these fairs, students will learn more about resources, services and perks accessible to Bruins. Students should be sure to check out the multiple academic departments, programs and college resources available, as well as free food and prizes.

Club Rush

Club Rush events for fall 2018

  • Tuesday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., South City Campus, east entrance and Student Forum
  • Wednesday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Jordan Campus, courtyard between the High Tech Center and Jordan Health Sciences buildings
  • Thursday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Taylorsville Redwood Campus, west of the Student Center

While perusing the resource fairs, make sure to stop by Club Rush, which will be located next to the fairs.

SLCC has more than 60 clubs that anyone can join. Club Rush allows all of them to show what they’ve got and why one should be a part of it. It is highly recommendable for first-time students to check out those clubs and start getting involved.

Meet and Greets

ODMA Meet and Greets for fall 2018

  • Tuesday, American Indian/Native American Meet and Greet
  • Wednesday, Asian Meet and Greet
  • Sept. 18, Pacific Islander Meet and Greet
  • Sept. 19, Latino Meet and Greet
  • Sept. 25, African American/African Meet and Greet
  • Sept. 26, Multicultural Meet and Greet

The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) have come up with events designed specifically for students that fit within the listed communities; they are also open to anyone who wants to participate. The main goal is to create a fun social environment, so students can generate and strengthen great relationships with other students.

Advisors will be there to explain more about what ODMA is and to answer any questions students might have. They will all be hosted at the Student Center, room 236, from 6-8 p.m. at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story listed an incorrect location for Club Rush at Taylorsville Redwood Campus. We apologize for the error.
