Want to get more out of SLCC? Join a club

There’s more to the college experience than attending classes and paying off student loans.

Students can get a lot more out of their time in school by participating in extracurricular activities, and luckily, Salt Lake Community College has an abundance of clubs to fill that role.

There are over 60 active clubs at SLCC, which gives students a wide selection to choose from. The focus of the clubs range everywhere from Chess Club and Drama Club to Pre-Medical Professionals and the Automotive and Racing Crew.

Clubs and organizations vice president Darrell Godfrey says clubs provide students with an easy way to get out and socialize.

“You can attend an event or activity that clubs are holding and start building relationships with new and different people that you wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to meet,” Godfrey adds.

Not only do clubs help start new friendships, but they can be a great way to network and meet people that are going into the same industry.

Something students should keep in mind is the fact that clubs will generally be limited to a single location, based upon the focus of the club. For example, Drama Club would meet at the South City Campus, since that campus houses the Performing Arts Department.

Another important point to keep in mind is that some clubs have stipulations you must meet in order to join. For example, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average to join the Honor Society Club.

Despite the abundance of clubs at SLCC, you may decide to start your own because it doesn’t exist yet.

Students who are interested in creating their own clubs are advised to first meet with Godfrey for assistance, including a rundown of the process.

“I go through the process of what form [you] need to fill out to get the ball rolling. Then [you] also have to have an advisor that wants to watch over the club,” Godfrey says. “Once [you] have an advisor and the forms filled out, [you’re] also gonna need to have at least five students enrolled in the current semester in the club.”

For a list of clubs at SLCC, students can look online or, preferably, attend Club Rush. Club Rush is an event held within the first couple weeks of fall and spring semester where the clubs at SLCC get together to showcase themselves and increase membership.

This semester, Club Rush will be held Sept. 11 at South City Campus, Sept. 12 at Jordan Campus, and Sept. 13 at Taylorsville Redwood Campus.

Anyone who has questions about clubs at SLCC can visit the Student Life & Leadership offices or contact a club for more information.
