Theatre program resurrects classic radio play

Salt Lake Community College theatre students will be performing “Dracula: A Live Radio Play” in the Black Box Theatre.

The live performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The script, written by SLCC student Zack Christensen, is a new adaptation of the classic “Dracula” script by Orson Welles, which was broadcast on radio in 1938.

Audience members will feel like they are inside of a 1930s radio studio. Actors will be dressed in period attire, coming and going from the stage as they perform their lines. There will be live sound effects created by a foley effects table on stage and there will even be commercials put into the middle of the play.

SLCC theatre program director Zac Curtis says his crew will try to stay as authentic to 1930s radio style as they can. He will be working with the cast and director, adjunct theatre faculty Ben Sansom, to help make sure everything goes smoothly.

Curtis and technical director Jon Clark have done radio theatre in the past and had been looking for ways to bring this format to a campus production. “Dracula” was picked because it has an abundance of audience appeal and people love the story of Dracula. They hope this play will start a tradition of radio theatre at SLCC.

The play will be archived during production with one of the recording studios at South City Campus. Anyone who is unable to attend the live performances can listen to the play later on Radio SLCC.

Tickets will be $10 for general admission and $5 for students, which applies to students of all ages. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling the Grand Theatre box office at 801-957-3322.

Visit the SLCC theatre Facebook page or contact Zac Curtis for more information.
