Women’s basketball: SLCC falls to Trinity Valley in NJCAA quarterfinal

A problematic first half for No. 3 seed Salt Lake Community College contributed to an upset loss to No. 6 seed Trinity Valley Community College 63-54 in their NJCAA quarterfinal matchup in Lubbock, Texas.

SLCC (30-3) scored the first seven points of the game, but Trinity Valley (31-3) stormed back with a 13-0 run which put them in the lead for good.

The Bruins shot just 9-of-28 from the field and converted a single free throw in the first half. The Bruins also committed seven turnovers while forcing only one Trinity Valley turnover and trailed by 19 at the break.

Despite a 19-5 run in the third quarter Salt Lake could not complete a comeback.

Tilar Clark led the Bruins with 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Iva Georgieva added 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and Ma’Ata Epenisa contributed nine points and six rebounds.

Salt Lake converted just 6-of-9 free throws for the game while Trinity Valley made 17-of-19 free throws. The Bruins shot 34.4 percent but just 20 percent (4-for-20) from 3-point range.

Trinity Valley’s Maya Singleton had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Christalah Lyons scored 14 points and Naomi Davenport added 12 points and five rebounds.
