Fashion students from Salt Lake Community College had the opportunity to learn from and network with industry professionals last week.

13 students and two advisors from the Fashion Institute traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the MAGIC fashion convention Feb. 16-18, hoping to find inspiration among the different vendors.

MAGIC is one of the largest fashion conventions in the world, and invites vendors from around the globe to showcase their new designs for the upcoming seasons.

“It’s a little overwhelming,” says SLCC Fashion Club president Alisa Woicicki. “When you’re in a classroom, you don’t see this kind of stuff in there.”

More than 65,000 retailers and over 2,000 different vendors were at last year’s convention. The numbers for this year are still undetermined, but are expected to surpass last year’s totals.

Retailers attend MAGIC to purchase their inventory for the coming months, and larger companies go to source their designs with factories in China, India and the United States.

SLCC students had the opportunity to network with experts and gain insight into designing collections of their own, such as children’s clothing or leather accessories.

Students who want to pursue a career in fashion can complete a two-year degree with an emphasis in fashion design, fashion merchandising or technical apparel design.

For more information about the Fashion Institute, contact program director Mojdeh Sakaki at mojdeh.sakaki@slcc.edu or by phone at 801-957-2017.
