Salt Lake Community College students stuffed stockings to benefit children with cancer this Christmas.
Students from the fashion and interior design programs hosted their annual Stuffed Stocking drive in support of Helping Kids with Cancer.
”We encourage all students to donate,” says SLCC Fashion Club president Alisa Woicicki.
Donors purchase a stocking — plain or personalized — and fill it with toys, books, puzzles or other gifts.
All stockings are given to children undergoing treatment at Primary Children’s Hospital. Stockings are divided into different age groups to ensure that donated items are age appropriate.
Many Fashion Club students also created their own stocking for entry into a club-sponsored design contest. The contest winner from each category — most donated, most creative and most festive — will receive a $50 gift card.
According to Woicicki, non-fashion club students donated more stockings than actual Fashion Club members. At the time of this writing, the Fashion Club contributed 75 stockings.
While the donation period at SLCC ended Nov. 30, Woicicki advises students to “look for it next year.”
Helping Kids with Cancer has hosted this event for 17 years. The non-profit organization has assisted thousands of families during that time.
Anyone who missed out on donating stockings can still support the cause.
Helping Kids with Cancer will hold a benefit auction Dec. 3 in Salt Lake City. Proceeds will be given to families of pediatric cancer patients.
We have been doing this for the past 12 years. This year we collected and donated 159 stockings to cheer up 159 young cancer patients.
