Salt Lake Community College’s Visual Art and Design department is set to host a faculty art show beginning Nov. 19 at South City Campus.
Various types of artwork created by adjunct and full-time faculty will be on display in the George S. & Dolores Dore Eccles Art Gallery.
“Our hope is to showcase the diversity of talent that we have in our department,” says SLCC photography professor Whitney King Hyans.
King Hyans is responsible for reviving the faculty art show, which had been inactive for 15 years. King Hyans says she “planted the seed” for the return of the show and others got on board with it.
“Since we moved to this building [South City Campus], it’s been a huge transition,” King Hyans says.
The art show was previously held in the Markosian Library at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The building ran out of room for the setup of artwork which led to a temporary halt in the display.
Faculty submissions include illustrations, animations, fine art paintings, graphic designs, website designs and photography.
King Hyans says, “we have a good representation [of artwork]” for each program in the Visual Arts and Design department.
Though not largely publicized, the pieces are for sale upon request.
Anyone interested in buying artwork can use their smartphone to scan a barcode tagged on each piece that contains the purchase information and price.
King Hyans intends to continue the tradition of the faculty art show, which will likely be a biannual event. Her hope is that with more frequency, more people will be inclined to participate.
“Our faculty are super talented and we wanted people to see it,” says King Hyans.
Opening ceremony will take place Thursday, Nov. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served at the opening. The show is free and open to students, staff, faculty and the community.
The artwork will be on display over the course of winter break through Jan. 29, 2016.
