For some critics, college drama is merely a step up from high school acting class. But drama students at Salt Lake Community College aim to change that viewpoint.
The SLCC Drama Club will put their hard work on display through their production of “A Lie of the Mind,” originally written by Sam Shepard and directed by SLCC’s own, Josh Richardson.
“You need to see the potential that college theatre holds,” says student actor William Davies.
In the intimate setting of the Black Box Theatre, attendees will feel the emotion of the actors in a different way.
“It’s important to involve yourself with art. To make it something you can potentially touch,” says fellow actor Andrew Martin.
“A Lie of the Mind” shows both sides of an abusive relationship and the challenges that arise from it.
“This is a simple story about complex people,” says Davies, who plays the role of an abusive father.
Both Davies and Martin agree that a lot of preparation has been put forth into the making of this play.
Due to some strong language and a central theme of domestic abuse, the production is not family-friendly.
“This production is about coping and the road to recovery,” adds Martin, who portrays the son in the family.
“A Lie of the Mind” will take place Sept. 24-26, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1-3 in the Black Box at South City Campus. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. each night.
Tickets are $5 with a student I.D. and $10 without. Tickets can be purchased at the Grand Theatre box office.
Light concessions will be provided courtesy of the Drama Club. All proceeds support the Drama Club activities.
