Locking in their third straight win, Salt Lake Community College Women’s Basketball seem to have found the formula to their success, as they demolish two teams back to back in the Coca Cola Invitational.
The most recent victory was this past Saturday against Chemeketa Community College in which, the Bruins ended up beating by a solid 20 points.
Even though SLCC blew CCC out of the water it did not happen right away. The Bruins and the Storm both came out looking very unfocused and disorganized.
Considering the overall score was a mere five to five with 14 minutes left in the first half due to excessive turnovers from both squads.
The pace and energy of the game picked up when Natalie Parsons finds forward Britney Johnson on the short corner who converts a tough five foot jump shot.
After a few more well executed plays, guard Rau Gultekin leads a trap as the Bruins force a steal. She then leads the break finding guard Miranda Averett who hits a ten foot jumpshot putting SLCC up 15 to five with eleven minutes left in the first half.
Once the Bruins put a few points on the board and created a slight cushion, it was like a shark smelling blood because they took off and never looked back ending the half 35 to 22.
Coming out in the second half the Bruins looked fierce, as they dump it down to forward Bella Swan on the post who converts a strong layup.
Swan ends up with a powerful eight rebounds, three assist and six points.
SLCC was playing at high level and everybody was involved contributing in some way. The second half was dominated by the Bruins with the defense as a large part of why they continued to slay their opponent.
In the midst of the Bruins successful second half, sophomore forward Britney Johnson takes a hard blow from the Storm.
“I got thrown to the floor pretty hard, but I knew I had to play hard for my team and go out there and give it my all,” says forward Johnson.
This did not stop her from producing for her team as she turns in 13 points shooting an impressive six for seven from the field.
Around 13 minutes left in the game SLCC had gained a large lead of 20 points on CCC.
This lead was due to the Bruins great execution and also Averetts large contribution as she stole the spotlight.
Although Averett comes off the bench it does not affect her or the team, but rather helps the Bruins and gives them the spark they need.
Averett was all over the floor shooting jumpshots, driving to the basket and knocking down three point steals. She scored an outstanding 18 points shooting nine for eleven from the field.
“I like coming off the bench because I feel like I can give them a spark, and get them going a little bit,” says sophomore guard Averett.
It was an overall strong team effort and SLCC prevailed against the storm.
Taking what they did in this game and applying it to their SWAC opener against Snow College on Saturday Dec. 14, should have them coming out on top.
