Lady Bruins ‘Dig Pink’ to support the fight against breast cancer

The SLCC Lady Bruins Volleyball team wore pink jerseys in support of the fight against breast cancer at the “Dig Pink” home game on Friday, Sept. 28.

Dig Pink is an effort to raise money for breast cancer research by the non-profit organization Swing for Life.  During the game, SLCC auctioned off merchandise autographed by its volleyball players to raise money for the cause.

Kathy Howa, founder of Swing for Life, was in attendance as the Lady Bruins took down Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) in three sets.

Howa was Rowland-Hall’s softball coach in 2002 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The athletes on her team showed their support for her by wearing pink ribbons during each game while she endured radiation and chemotherapy.

She is now cancer-free, and uses her personal experience as inspiration for others.

Today, her organization Swing for Life aims to donate $50,000 each year to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

In front of their fans also clad in pink, the Lady Bruins started slowly but closed out CNCC in three games, winning 25-14, 25-12 and finally 25-8.

SLCC freshman Adria Downs kept the Bruins scoring with 8 kills, while freshman libero Jaclyn Condie was key in keeping CNCC from getting on the scoreboard too often with 11 digs.

SLCC also defeated USU-Eastern that weekend.  That game was played Saturday afternoon, Sept. 29 at home and was another win in three sets: 25-15, 25-8, and 25-14.  These two wins put the SLCC women’s volleyball team at 3-1 in conference.
