Stay safe in SLCC parking lots

Salt Lake Community College offers a parking lot escort service to assist students and staff in the evenings.

Any SLCC student, faculty or staff member can call 801-957-3800 to request an escort to their car by the nearest campus safety officer or Utah Highway Patrol officer, should they feel threatened or endangered. The service is available Monday through Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.

According to Lieutenant Section Commander for Salt Lake Community College, Jeff Willmore, while crimes are rare, the program was started to make campuses safer for staff, students and visitors. Lt. Willmore said that it’s a preventative measure. The officer escort will carry a radio so that they can immediately call dispatch should an incident arise.

For students who have late classes, Willmore has some additional advice.

“If you have to walk out to your vehicle at night, walk with someone, call someone that you can talk to while you walk, and to have the escort service number on speed dial so you can call them,” he says. “Keep an eye on your surroundings and park in well lighted areas so you don’t have to walk far. Lock your car, keep any valuables in your trunk or put them out of sight.”
