Salt Lake Community College recently installed a secure bike cage to help protect the property of students and employees at South City Campus.
The bicycle racks near the student parking on the west side of the building are now surrounded by a tall fence. The fence curves at the top and has spikes at the end to prevent thieves from breaking in. The enclosed area can only be accessed by anyone who scans their new SLCC OneCard at the gate.
SLCC Parking Services affiliate Rick Medley supports the new bike cage and believes it will help anyone who prefers to ride their bicycle to school.
The cage is expected to reduce the number of bicycle thefts that occur on campus. SLCC and the Utah Highway Patrol are testing the fence at South City Campus to see what improvements can be made before more cages are set up at other locations.
As an additional security measure, the UHP encourages all SLCC students and employees to register their bicycles with Parking Services. Call 801-957-4011 for more information.
