Campus gym helps SLCC students stay in shape

Salt Lake Community College students have a resource on campus to help them achieve and maintain their fitness goals.

The Lifetime Activities Center, aka LAC, houses a variety of exercise areas, including a weight room, racquetball and basketball courts, and a track. SLCC students who need to take a break from their heavy workload are free to use the facilities and other services.

“The [LAC] offers just that — lifetime activities. … Students can learn skills, whether it be fitness skills, strength training skills, sports skills … for staying healthy and fit,” says LAC recreation director Lisa Peshell.

In addition to the on-campus gym, personal trainers are available through the LAC.

“Students can hire a personal trainer through campus recreation, at the check-in desk where you use the gym,” says health and lifetime activities employee Bridget Vickery. “You pay can pay for one session for $22.50 or if you purchase additional sessions in groups of four then it makes the price a little cheaper.”

Vickery adds if a student and a friend sign up together they can receive sessions for a reduced group price. Each personal training session lasts one hour.

The recreation desk also provides equipment rentals such as shower towels, basketballs, weight belts, pingpong and racquetball gear. Students can use the equipment during their workout in exchange for their student ID.

Any student who is taking a course in the LAC gets free access to their locker for the duration of the semester. Students who do not have any courses at the LAC can pay $7 to rent a locker for the semester.

All students need to access the gym is their OneCard ID.

“You have to have your student ID card,” says LAC employee Jake Moua. “You can pick [up] your [OneCard] at the Student Center but that’s how students gain access.”

Moua also says if a OneCard is not calibrated for the touch pad at the door, the LAC front desk can help a student activate their card so they can enter the gym.

The LAC is located on the west side of Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Current open gym hours are posted on the SLCC Athletics website.
