Salt Lake Community College students now have a new place to work out.
SLCC unveiled the Bruin Fitness Center last month at South City Campus. The new fitness center provides a convenient workout area for students and faculty who spend most of their time at South City Campus.
Before the Bruin Fitness Center, students could only take advantage of the free gym in the Lifetime Activities Center at Taylorsville Redwood Campus. Bringing a fitness center to another campus was a priority for the SLCC Student Association, who wants to promote a healthy and fit lifestyle for fellow Bruins.
“We are changing the way the school is organized to make it more and more possible in coming years that a student doesn’t have to move from one campus to the next,” says Curtis Larsen, assistant vice president for Student Life and Leadership. “I think many students can identify with the challenges of [having] three classes [at South] and then a fourth at Taylorsville … The goal is [to] make it so any student who’s in the art, communication, or digital media field can do their whole [program] at South City Campus.”

The Bruin Fitness Center holds 20 pieces of equipment, including treadmills and weight machines, and also provides changing rooms. The center offers students the convenience of another location to work out and the ability to sign up for weight training and other health classes.
Prior to the construction of the Center for Arts and Media, the wing was home to an outdated and often leaking pool and gym that was a part of the original South High School. For several years, the Student Association pushed for an old SAT lab to be converted into the fitness center that had been missing from the campus.
Promoting a healthy lifestyle through education and exercise is one of the results that SLCC administrators envision for the Bruin Fitness Center.
“In life, the first thing to do is to take care of yourself,” says Dr. Abio Ayeliya, a coordinator for Student Life and Leadership. “That includes eating healthy, getting enough sleep, getting enough exercise and engaging in the community, and that piece was missing at South City Campus. Students come and they don’t have access to exercise, they have to buy a membership to go to Planet Fitness or VASA. So having the center there right now is saving students a lot of money and a lot of time.”

SLCC Athletics operations specialist and recreation coordinator Lisa Peshell laid out the groundwork for future additions in the Bruin Fitness Center: She explained that the TVs in the room will be connected to cable, and students have lobbied for a sound system to go into the rooms as well. There are currently cubbies available for people to put their belongings, but lockers will be another feature added later.
The hours for the Bruin Fitness Center are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the exception of classes using the room during the week. Students will need their OneCard for entry to the room. The center also has an attendant who can show guests how to use the equipment properly and safely.
SLCC is really flexing their muscles when it comes to improving the overall health and fitness goals of both students and faculty. A preliminary plan for a fitness center at the new Jordan Campus student center is in the works and will be completed at a later date.

YESSSSS!!!!!
This is awesome. Glad someone decided to bring this to South City Campus. Hope students will realize how blessed they are to have this and use it often.
Where is it located? Can I use my work fob for entry?
The fitness room is room 1-170 at the South City campus.
Does it (or will it) have squat racks, deadlift platforms, and free weights?
They didn’t specify if they are going to get those, but they did say they’ll be getting more equipment soon. I’d suggest asking the attendant that stays in the room for more info!
