Here at the Salt Lake Community College there are several students among us with a variety of talents.

Like any other student, Omar Gerardo is studying to get his degree here at SLCC. But while Omar studies to be a pharmacy tech, he also sings vocals and plays guitar for local reggae band The Hemptations.

“Study hard, work really hard, and always have time to play music,” he says.

While Omar leads a busy life, he decided to continue his passion for music.

“Music is a spiritual feeling that I can’t explain,” he says. “Life itself inspires me to write and play music. Whether it is in front of a crowd of thousands or in front of one person, playing music is what I love the most.”

Omar and the rest of The Hemptations were recently nominated for best local reggae band by City Weekly.

“Even if we don’t win, we feel blessed to have been nominated,” he says.

Anyone interested in learning more about Omar and The Hemptations can visit the band’s Facebook page.
