Parking lot escorts help students feel safer

Salt Lake Community College has taken measures to ensure the safety of its students from the classroom to the parking lot.

Any student who feels uneasy about walking to their car at Taylorsville Redwood Campus or South City Campus can request a parking lot escort. Students who request an escort will be contacted by an officer, who will then assist the student across campus until they are safely inside their vehicle.

According to Ahmad Veradi, former administrator of the parking lot escort program at South City Campus, the service was originally directed towards students who took night classes or stayed after hours.

Veradi says that at one time four to five students a week requested a police officer to escort them to their vehicles. As time passed, less and less calls were made, and the program had to be modified according to the needs of the students.

Any student who feels like they need an escort can call Student Services.

The parking lot escort program is available until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 5 p.m. on Fridays.

If you are in need of this service you can call the Contact Center at 801-957-4111 and an operator will assist you according to your campus.
