Student to publish art and photography magazine

Salt Lake Community College student Marla Duggins wants to start producing a new magazine consisting of photos and artwork done by SLCC students. Those majoring in photography or art would get the opportunity to get their works out into the public.

“I’ve wanted to start a magazine for over ten years,” says Duggins. “When I saw everybody’s work hanging on the wall, it was all so different. I thought if I got everybody here to help start the magazine, then I could show them all of the different aspects of experimental shots.”

Duggins has been trying for two months to get students and locals to help get the magazine started. Very impressed with what she has seen, Duggins hopes to get as many pieces in her magazine as possible. But she cannot do it alone.

“I would like someone who knows things about graphic design, web design, or marketing, to help me out,” she says.

Once she gets help, she will start looking at student submissions. Along with the submission, students would have to pay a twenty dollar entrance fee. The money would then go to the publication of the magazine. After the pieces have been submitted, Duggins will donate to the Society for Photographic Education.

The magazine would start here at SLCC, but Duggins hopes that the magazine will reach a larger audience in the future.

Duggins also wants to place all submissions onto her website. Both the magazine and the website would contain the same content.

“I didn’t get enough donations, so I’m extending the deadline to June 2. I’m going to go to all the schools, photography studios and magazines to advertise. Hopefully I can get some entries that way,” says Duggins.

Anyone who wants to help in this operation can contact Duggins or visit her website for more information.
