The SLCC Veterans Center is a warm and welcoming place for all veterans and their dependents attending school.  The Center is a national model for its comprehensive and inclusive veteran services; the first of its kind at an institution of higher learning in the State of Utah.  SLCC has earned the distinction of being designated by G.I. Jobs as a Military Friendly School since 2010 and is also a participating Yellow Ribbon school.

The Veterans Center, located in the lower level of the Student Center Room 059 on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus, features a lounge and computer lab for veterans use and convenient office hours.  Open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., veterans and their dependents are always welcome to study, relax and receive additional support services in the Center.  Our friendly, knowledgeable staff is ready to assist you to use GI Educational Benefits, interface with the college, and be successful students, employees and community members. If you are not using your GI Bill, please check with us to ensure you are identified with the college as being a Veteran and we will keep you informed on all activities we will be holding for our Veterans during the year.

Members from numerous community support organizations meet with veterans in the Center at various times providing additional information and financial and educational support. Our staff is happy to facilitate a meeting with or assist to provide information on any of the following organizations: VetSuccess On Campus Counselor, Helmets to Hardhats program, Veterans Upward Bound, Department of Workforce Services-Vet Rep, VA Hospital Patient Advocate, VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Education counselors and various tuition assistance programs.

The SLCC Veterans Club is dedicated to assisting veterans to be successful in an educational setting and adjust to the challenges of civilian life.  This is accomplished by establishing and maintaining fellowship between veterans through social activities, workshops, service projects and providing valuable information.

The staff of the Veterans Center is dedicated to promoting and pursuing all assistance for military students and keeping current on benefits and programs. The staff consists of four college employees who are the VA Certifying Officials and eight veteran work-study students from various branches of the service.  The majority of employees are current or past military members. VA Work Study positions are available in our office for veterans receiving benefits wishing to work while pursuing educational goals.

Many veterans share that the Center is much like a mini USO and feels comfortable and welcoming.  Ramsey Campbell, SLCC student and veteran, notes, “The Veterans Center is like a good mate; someone who understands your past and believes in your future.”  1,300 veterans attend SLCC each semester with more than 850 veterans actively using GI Education benefits to pursue higher education goals.  “Over the last year the number of Veterans attending SLCC has doubled.  We welcome all veterans and dependents attending SLCC whether using VA benefits or not to use the Center.  It is a gift from the college in gratitude for your services to our country,” explains Darlene Head, Manager of the SLCC Veterans Center.

Visit www.gibill.va.gov or come into the Veterans Center to get current facts and information on all benefits available and to use the facilities here for you.
