A grand ol’ time at SLCC’s Grand Theatre

Salt Lake Community College students do not have to look very far for entertainment this school year. The Grand Theatre, located on the South City Campus at 1575 South State Street, has been providing entertainment to Salt Lake community residents for over 75 years.

Built in 1931, the Grand Theatre has withstood the test of time. Since its opening, the theatre has been a place for local residents to experience professional theatre at a decent price. The Grand Theatre is known for its professionalism starting at the top with the Executive and Artistic Director, Richard Scott. Scott is in his ninth year as Director of the Grand Theatre and recently was named the 2010 Salt Lake City Mayor’s Performing Artist. Scott’s directing philosophy is aimed at keeping the theatre “community based.”

“We have a commitment to the Salt Lake community,” Scott said. “We use local talent and keep local prices, all the while offering an extraordinary theatre experience for everyone.” Each year the Grand Theatre showcases five major performances. The season begins with a performance in late August and concludes with its fifth and final performance in May. Notable productions of the past have included Handel’s “Messiah”, “Man of La Mancha” and “My Fair Lady.”

Aside from the five feature shows, the Grand Theatre offers a variety of events throughout the year, including volunteer opportunities, lectures, symposiums, fundraisers and much more.

For some, the affordable pricing is the best part of the Grand Theatre experience. First-class seating can be purchased for a low price of only $24. In addition, SLCC students who present a valid student ID can receive up to $9 off the already affordable ticket price.

“The cast members at Grand Theatre always put on a great, professional show and the admission price is extremely reasonable,” Grand Director Richard Scott said. “The experience students will get here…they can’t get anywhere else in town.”

The Grand Theatre also offers season tickets which give customers preferred seating for all five productions and 30 percent savings off the ticket price.

Visit the Grand Theatre soon to be a part of this quality theatre experience. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Grand Theatre family can audition to star in an upcoming show.

For information on how to purchase tickets, audition, or volunteer, and a list of this season’s upcoming productions, visit the Grand Theatre’s website at www.the-grand.org.
