Summer semester at SLCC

There is nothing going on at Salt Lake Community College during the summer. During the fall and spring semesters it seems like there are always activities taking place at the College. Clubs hold activities in which anyone is invited, and special activities like the Diversity Dinner that Student Life and Leadership hosts and SLCC’s Mardi Gras celebration are just a few of the activities that take place during spring semester. During the summer however, most clubs don’t even meet.

There are also plenty of sports during the fall and spring semesters such as basketball and softball, but again during summer semester, sports are hard to come by.

During fall and spring semesters the bulletin boards on campus are full of notices of activities at the school, but in the summer there are few notices all together. Even then, most of these are just for apartments available to rent, rooms for rent, books for sale, and the like.

As boring as campus life is during the summer, I can see why such is the case. There are far fewer students that attend in the summer, and the smaller population allows time for staff to go on vacation and time for major changes like phase two of the Legacy Fountain Project to take place.

There can also be some advantages for students to having a semester when the school is not so busy. One big one is that the semester is only eight weeks long, and a lot of the classes are smaller. Secondly, Student Express is not as busy and there are more computers available to use. In addition, most departments such as financial aid are not quite as busy during the summer as they are during fall and spring semester. The food court is not as busy, and neither is the bookstore.

So I’ll admit that there are some advantages to summer semester. That doesn’t change the fact that the College is boring during summer, though. The school should try to promote more activity at the campuses during the summer. It would help make going to school a little better for the students during these months.
