Work it out

Gyms. Down the street, in apartment complexes and even in shopping malls, they are everywhere, helping people keep their bodies in shape.

But gyms are not free, ranging anywhere from $20 to $50 a month. The gym at Salt Lake Community College, however, is free for all students. With a OneCard acting as the gym pass, students can use the gym without having to pay a monthly fee.

With all of the college costs such as tuition, books and living expenses, college students are trying to find more ways to save money. Having a free gym pass at SLCC that students can come and use is something every student should know is available.

“Oh yeah, the gym here is awesome. It is not only a gym that has all the equipment I need, but I save money too,” said Lua Afatasi a student at SLCC.

At the Taylorsville Redwood Campus the gym is located on the west end of the campus. In the SLCC directory the gym is listed as the Lifetime Activities Center (LAC).

The LAC has many features. A large basketball court is in the middle with six baskets available. Five racquetball courts are against one wall, and there are two different rooms for machine and weightlifting use. Also a running track above wraps around the entire inside of the gym. Equipment is available to rent. This is the one time that money is necessary, as a renting fee is required.

“This is a free option open to all students to come and stay in shape,” said Alex Shelby, a SLCC student who works at the front desk in the LAC. He is employed by SLCC.

“The human body is under stress every day. From work, school, family or finances. There are a lot of ways to be stressed. Exercise is one way to help control or release these stresses,” said Trent Richards a first year doctor at The University of Utah.

“When all these classes just keep weighing on me, I can get out my frustration out by lifting weights,” said Afatasi.

But what if you are not a student at SLCC? Do not worry. You can still use the gym by paying for a one-time use or becoming a member. But you do need to be accompanied by someone who is a SLCC student to be able to gain entrance. More information is available on the SLCC website, www.slcc.edu.
