Assistive Technology Fair focuses on possibilities

As part of Disability Awareness Week, the Disability Resource Center hosted an Assistive Technology Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the South City Campus atrium.

The Assistive Technology Fair raised awareness at Salt Lake Community College about how technology is advancing to further help students with disabilities. The technology showcased can benefit everyone, not just those with disabilities.

“Everybody can benefit from the Assistive Technology Fair because it shows how people with disabilities adapt to the communities,” says high school transition accessibility advisor Daniel Dewitt. “Nobody is a loser, everyone is a winner.”

There were about a dozen booths, all highlighting different resources and opportunities. Resources on site included the Disability Law Center, which helps people with disabilities with their legal troubles, and Columbus Next Work, which provides and guides autistic individuals and their families through skills training to job placement.

There were also booths like Kostopulos Dream Foundation, also known as Camp K, which provides opportunity for people with disabilities and special needs to gain access and enjoy their community.

The Disability Resource Center also provides access to other valuable resources, including adaptive equipment, alternative text materials, assistive software, testing accommodations and more. For more information, visit the DRC offices at Taylorsville-Redwood, Jordan and South City campuses.
