The Facilities Services Division at Salt Lake Community College is working on a few projects at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The most visible is the summer construction on the “quad,” but parts of the Technology Building and Business Building will also be updated.
The renovations will provide a more comfortable and usable space for students and faculty. Construction will continue into the fall semester, but should not affect parking or classrooms.
Barton Mace, Director of Construction & Crafts at the facilities office, explains the “quad” project as mainly having to do with landscaping: “We are upgrading the area to include more trees, sitting areas and space that is comfortable for students and staff to relax.”
In the Technology Building, six classrooms and the main lobby will be updated. “Basically,” Mace says, “it will be an upgrade of classes to redo the finishes: floor finishes, wall finishes — new ceilings with LED high-efficiency lighting and new AV equipment for projector and projector screens.”
There are further plans to replace the single pane exterior windows in the Tech Building with more efficient windows. Construction will begin in fall, break for winter and resume in spring. Work hours will be primarily during the day and planned around class times to minimize noise.
Other miscellaneous improvements for the fall and spring semester include new room ID and accessibility signage in both the Tech Building and Business Building as well as restroom updates in just the Business Building. The signage will give little to no disruption to students and staff, meanwhile the three restrooms under construction will be staggered so that one or more is always publicly available.
The Facilities Services Mission Statement asserts: “Our mission is to foster an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning by providing an attractive, clean, safe and comfortable environment.” Although construction can at times be inconvenient, the Facilities Department is just doing their job.
