SLCC nursing student balances busy workload

It can be difficult for Mayda Torres to find the time to do it all.

Torres is a full-time Salt Lake Community College nursing student who also works as an immigration paralegal. At home, she is a wife and mother of six who attends church three days a week. She starts her days by ferrying all six of her children to three different schools and one babysitter, before rushing to a packed schedule at school.

“I have no leisure time,” she says. “I watch Netflix while I’m cooking or cleaning.”

Torres finds that making checklists is the easiest way to keep track of what needs to be done. If she starts getting behind or finds herself with too long of a to-do list, that’s when the stress begins.

Torres may end up shortening her list to avoid the pressure of trying to do it all at once. But when she looks at the items crossed off her checklist, and sees how much she can accomplish in one day, it gives her the “motivation and drive to keep it up.”
