Salt Lake Community College has made a change to its shuttle service for the summer semester.
To save money during the summer, SLCC has suspended the southbound route of the B-Line bus system. The route, which runs to the Jordan and Miller campuses, will be reactivated in time for the fall semester.
Operation of the southbound line is estimated to cost between $12,000 and $18,000. Based on the number of students who ride the shuttle, the Executive Council determined that the route should be terminated during the summer months.
“Out of the 60,000 [SLCC] students there are about 10 passengers who use the B-Line regularly,” says Connor Holt, executive vice president of the SLCC Student Association. “Most of [these] passengers are being counted twice, meaning they take the B-Line to the South City Campus and back to the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. In reality then, [there are] really only five people using the B-Line.”
The Executive Council found that the money being spent to transport just a few students could be used in better places. What the extra money will be used for has yet to be determined.
SLCC students who have paid their student fees can use their OneCard as a UTA pass for $15 a month. The Executive Council is in talks with UTA to add a bus line to the 9000 S. exit to help the students who attend the Miller Campus.
