Salt Lake Community College’s volleyball team lost three out of four of their matches at the tournament in Iowa over the weekend.
It was a tough set of games for the team featuring games against 3 of the top 4 ranked teams in the nation. Head Coach Sue Dulaney thinks that it helped the team.
“There were three valuable lessons learned in those losses,” says Dulaney. “It set the bar for them.”
Ranked at #6 before the tournament started, on Friday, Aug. 23, the Bruins faced #2 ranked Iowa Western Community College and #4 ranked San Jacinto Community College. They got their lone win in the tourney against San Jacinto.
“We have some things to work on,” says Dulaney.
On Saturday, Aug. 24, they lost to Polk State and #1 ranked Western Nebraska Community College. While the games were played to 5 matches, the Bruins just couldn’t get over the top.
Dulaney says that the team is “super coachable” and shows a “lot of positive signs.”
“We earned our points,” says Dulaney. “I was happy with the way we ended the tournament.”
Volleyball visits the LAC
The Bruins host a volleyball tournament Aug. 30 and 31 before heading out for an extended road trip. Students get in for free with their OneCard.
The tourney will feature some of the top ranked teams in the nation including the defending national champions and #1 ranked Western Nebraska Community College.
“It’s a very competitive tournament,” says Dulaney.
According to Dulaney, fans can expect to see an exciting game that is easy to understand played by very athletic and powerful women.
“You’re on a 30 by 30 area with a net as your obstacle,” says Dulaney. “There’s a point every play.” Unforced errors cost a team points.
On Friday, Aug. 30, the team is scheduled to play MSU-West Plains at 10 a.m. and Central Arizona at 2 p.m.
On Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. the Bruins will step in against Eastern Arizona College and take on Casper College at 1 p.m.
All of the losses have been close. The team could use fan support to get them over the top.
