Home Arts and Entertainment Q&A: Local author Cass Biehn on Utah’s growing list of banned books

  1. Thanks for your comment. To clarify, no state bans books for the general public. A state’s banned‑books list always refers specifically to titles removed from K–12 school libraries and classrooms, which we reiterated in the lede. Utah’s latest round of removals at the end of September added several new titles to the K–12 banned‑books list. Cass Biehn, an author with a master’s in library science, speaks from both professional training and personal experience. Books removed from shelves are disproportionately about queer or other marginalized communities. Biehn addresses why access to literature in K–12 settings is important for young readers.

  2. The title implies there are books banned in Utah but this author only focuses on books that are related to gay(lgbt) issues that are removed from school libraries and curriculum. Fair enough to take the stance in disagreement to that. But let’s not pretend that keeping gay(lgbt) themed books out of school libraries is some indication of Utah “banning books” as the title implies.
