Streaming live from the South City Campus, “your online student source” is where radio careers begin to take shape.

Ran almost entirely by students, Radio SLCC discusses what is happening on Salt Lake Community College campuses, as well as throughout Salt Lake City. The student radio station is also the place to hear the most current American Top 40 hits.

Students that are looking to fill their general education requirement for their communication class may want to take a closer look at what Communication 1560 has to offer.

“It definitely opened my eyes up to that industry and a possible path I could take,” says former radio student Mary Barker.

Comm 1560, taught by radio professional Scott Singpiel, is the class to take for students who want to learn about the radio business. Singpiel teaches students how to act and sound like a professional on-air personality while running a live radio broadcast.

Students also learn how to create radio advertisements with the Adobe Audition software program and run equipment that is used at all radio stations.

“Last semester, we had three students who got jobs at radio stations,” says Radio SLCC program manager Zac Hodge.

Although a degree or skill set certificate is helpful in any situation, neither is required to get a job in a broadcasting studio. Comm 1560 allows a student who has taken the course to improve their chance of landing an entry-level position at a news or radio station, as they have met many of the people who are already in the business.

Comm 1560 gives a hands-on learning experience in and out of the classroom. While taking the course, a student will be able to tour many of the local stations. These tours show working newsrooms and show exactly how broadcast news is created and produced in real time.

At SLCC, the campus radio station is a place to hear what is on the minds of the students as they express themselves live. A listener can actually hear the progress the students make as they work their way through the class and evolve their on-air personalities.

Radio SLCC could possibly be the way for you to get a start in radio broadcasting. Take a few minutes out of your day and listen to the Radio SLCC live stream to learn more.
